Hidden Secrets of National Heritage Week.
As National Heritage Week kicks off tomorrow, August 17th, Ireland’s cultural, built, and natural heritage takes center stage across the country. This week-long celebration brings together volunteers, community groups, and heritage enthusiasts to share their experience, knowledge, culture, and practices. Whether your interests lie in gastronomy, history, spoken word, music, or arts, there’s something for everyone to explore. Here’s a selection of truly unique experiences we at Spud highly recommend checking out over the course of the week.
1. Sigginstown Castle Tour Wexford, Daily at 3:00 PM
Step back in time with a visit to Sigginstown Castle, a 16th-century tower house currently undergoing a passionate restoration. As you explore the castle’s ancient walls and immerse yourself in the stories of its past inhabitants, don’t miss the chance to climb to the top of the tower on a fine day—where you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of Tacumshin Lake and the Celtic Sea. The story of this ongoing renovation has been featured on The Great House Revival TV show, offering an intimate look at the craftsmanship behind bringing history back to life.
2. Fork in the Road: A Foraging Fusion in Blarney Blarney, Cork
For those with a taste for adventure and gastronomy, "Fork in the Road" offers a foraging fusion experience in the heart of Blarney. This unique event is where nature’s bounty meets culinary creativity. Participants will forage for wild ingredients and then join in a hands-on cooking session to create a fusion of traditional and modern dishes. It’s a celebration of Ireland’s natural larder and a chance to learn how to bring the flavors of the wild into your kitchen.
3. Trip to Gola Island, Donegal Gweedore, Donegal
Escape to the rugged beauty of Gola Island, off the coast of Donegal, for a day of exploration and discovery. This trip takes you on a journey to one of Ireland’s hidden gems, where the natural landscape remains untouched, and the spirit of the island’s history is palpable. Walk the same paths as generations before you, hear tales of the island’s past, and soak in the breathtaking views of the Atlantic. It’s an experience that offers tranquility and a deep connection to Ireland’s natural heritage.
4. Tunes, Tales, Tae and Turf Longford
Step back into the 1940s and 50s with "Tunes, Tales, Tae and Turf" in Longford. This event re-enacts the olden days when neighbors gathered on the bog to rear turf together—an activity rich with tradition and community spirit. Stories were told, songs sung, and music played, all made more memorable with a customary cup of tea on the bog! With music from Joe McGrath and Noel Carberry, and contributions welcome, it's a nostalgic celebration of Irish rural life.
Visitors are encouraged to don period dress and perhaps take the high nellies out for a spin. Bring your own picnics, rugs, and seating, and prepare to join in the fun of Turf Games, where you can showcase your skills in wellie throwing, turf clamping, or even become the champion footer. It’s a day of spirited competition and communal joy, a nod to the simpler, yet richly fulfilling, ways of the past.
